Counselling

Counselling that holds the whole picture.

Our counsellors support children, teens, adults and families through anxiety, low mood, trauma, grief, relationships and life transitions. We're trauma-informed and neuro-affirming, which means we take behaviour as communication and we don't expect anyone to fit a template.

  • Trauma processed in a way the child's nervous system can handle
02

Adolescent counselling

Confidential counselling for teens managing anxiety, low mood, identity, friendships, school stress and trauma.

  • Trusted adult who isn't a parent or teacher
  • Skills for friendship, conflict and stress that actually work
  • Less self-harm, less risk-taking, more steady ground
  • Parents kept in the loop in a way that respects the teen
03

Adult counselling

Counselling for adults working through anxiety, low mood, trauma, adjustment, life transitions and relationship strain.

  • Steadier days at work and home
  • Patterns named and shifted, not just talked about
  • Practical strategies you'll actually use
  • A place to be honest without having to hold it together
04

Family and parenting counselling

Counselling for parents and families working through behaviour, big feelings, family change or how to support a child or teen.

  • A shared language across both parents
  • Strategies for behaviour that respect the child
  • Co-parenting through separation or family change
  • Repair after hard seasons in the family
05

Trauma-informed support

Gentle, paced counselling for clients of any age dealing with trauma, PTSD symptoms or the long shadow of difficult experiences.

  • Body and nervous system steadied before going deeper
  • Pace set by the client, not the clinician
  • Tools for the moments between sessions
  • Family or support people brought in where it's safe and helpful
06

Anxiety and regulation

Counselling for anxiety, panic and emotional regulation in kids, teens and adults.

  • Fewer panic spikes and faster recovery when they happen
  • Sleep that comes back
  • Strategies for school, work and social settings
  • Less avoidance, more chosen action
07

Grief and loss

Counselling for grief, bereavement, anticipatory grief and significant loss across the lifespan.

  • Space for grief to take the shape it actually has
  • Support through anniversaries and hard dates
  • Family included where the client wants them included
  • A way forward that doesn't ask you to 'move on'

What it is

Counselling for the moments that need a steady person

Counselling at Constellation is for people working through anxiety, low mood, trauma, grief, regulation, identity, relationships or a life change that's knocked them sideways. It's also for parents who want a place to think about how they're parenting, and for couples and families who want to talk it through with support.

Our counsellors hold recognised counselling qualifications (Diploma of Counselling minimum), most are members of professional bodies such as ACA or PACFA, and several are working towards or hold further qualifications in social work and psychology. Senior clinicians provide oversight.

Counselling sits alongside our psychology service. The right call between counsellor and psychologist often comes down to the type of support needed and the funding pathway, and we'll help you work that out at intake.

Common questions

Counselling FAQs
What's the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist?

Counsellors and psychologists both provide talking therapy. Psychologists are AHPRA-registered and can provide formal diagnosis, psychological assessment and treatment for complex mental health conditions. Counsellors are qualified through Diploma or higher and are usually members of bodies like ACA or PACFA. For many people, counselling is the right fit and more affordable. At intake we'll help you choose.

Can I claim counselling on Medicare?

Generally no. Medicare rebates apply to registered psychologists, social workers and occupational therapists working under a Mental Health Care Plan, not to counsellors. Some private health funds offer rebates for counselling, and NDIS, DVA and aged care funding can cover counselling where it's clinically appropriate.

Is counselling covered by NDIS?

Yes, in many cases. Where a participant's plan includes Improved Daily Living (Capacity Building) and counselling is appropriate for their goals, we can deliver counselling under NDIS. Support coordinators and plan managers are welcome to call our admin team to confirm fit.

How long does counselling take to work?

It depends on the issue, the goals and the person. Many of our adult clients see meaningful change inside six to twelve sessions for focused issues like anxiety or adjustment. Trauma work usually takes longer and we set pace with the client. We review progress regularly so you're never wondering if it's working.

Can my child or teen see a counsellor?

Yes. We have counsellors with experience working with children and adolescents, including Youth Mental Health First Aid trained clinicians. For younger children we often use a mix of talk, play and creative approaches, and we coach parents alongside the child.

Do you offer parenting support and family counselling?

Yes. Many parents come to us alongside (or instead of) their child seeing someone. Family counselling can also be useful through separation, blended family transitions or after a hard season. We work in plain language and don't take sides.

Is everything I say in counselling confidential?

Yes, with the same legal exceptions every counsellor and psychologist works under: serious risk of harm to self or others, court subpoena, or mandatory reporting where a child is at risk. We'll walk through this in your first session so there are no surprises.
